History

Until 1869, Parklaan was a street with a canal under the names Achter Nieuwe Gracht (behind the new canal) and Tweede Nieuwe Gracht (second new canal). However, it was decided to fill in this canal and merge the two streets under one name: Parklaan. Architect L.P. Zocher completed the design, based on the idea of his father J.D. Zocher Jr., with the intention of creating more greenery in the neighbourhood. However, increasing traffic meant that more and more greenery had to be sacrificed. This led to a second redesign of Parklaan in the 1960s, when asphalt lanes were laid on either side of the green strip, as well as some parking spaces.

What is special about Parklaan 22B is that it was one of the houses used by the staff of the building at 74 Nieuwe Gracht, the street behind it. Around 1790 the wealthy yarn merchant Willem Philip Kops lived here, after whom the special Kopskamer is named that can now be admired in the Rijksmuseum. In this monumental house, you live with the luxury of today, in the history of yesterday.
