Drenthelaan 6

Around the corner from Heemstede’s lively shopping centre is this retail space, under the small-scale new construction complex ‘De Heerlijckheid’. There is a useable floor area of 111m² and a front width of more than 5 metres. The space has the modern look of a recently completed new building project and can be used for a variety of purposes. An overhead door is available.

Surroundings

The retail space is located in an attractive area with all amenities within easy reach. The attractive centre of Heemstede, consisting of the Raadhuistraat and the Binnenweg, is just around the corner. The Heemsteedse shopping centre is renowned both inside and outside the village for its diverse range of (luxury) boutiques, specialist shops and delicatessens. It is not without reason that this shopping street has formerly been crowned ‘nicest shopping street in the Netherlands’.

Accessibility

Located between two N-roads (the Herenweg and the Heemsteedse Dreef), providing a fast connection to the A-roads. Various buses also stop on these roads, making the location easily accessible by public transport as well. Furthermore, Heemstede-Aerdenhout railway station is less than 10 minutes’ cycling distance. There is plenty of paid and free parking for motorists.

History

The retail space is located under the residential complex ‘De Heerlijckheid’. An ode to the fascinating origins of Heemstede. A fiefdom was land belonging to a lord to which certain ‘lordly rights’ were attached. When Haarlem received city rights in 1245 and was delineated, the need to name the surrounding areas also grew. The Counts of Holland – William II and his son Floris V – had the noble task of transforming the villages outside Haarlem into separate districts. These new districts were either governed by aldermen or pledged to feudal lords. Heemstede itself was pledged to a nobleman from Holy, near Vlaardingen, named Reinier van Holy, who would later call himself ‘Van Heemstede’. Between 1284 and 1300, he built Heemstede Castle on the Spaarne. The castle was destroyed several times, until in 1810 it was so weak that it was demolished. The medieval foundations now lie beneath an estate called ‘Het Oude Slot’ (the old castle).
