‘De Heerlijckheid’ is ideally located; around the corner from the village centre and with plenty of nature in the immediate vicinity. In short, a friendly and small-scale residential complex offering real comfort!

Surroundings

‘De Heerlijckheid’ is located in an attractive area with all amenities within easy reach. For example, Heemstede’s lively town centre with its wide range of boutiques, specialist shops and restaurants is literally just around the corner! Excellent parking availability in front of the door. You don’t have to go far to find nature either; Groenendaal hiking forest and the beautiful Buitenplaats Leyduin are within cycling distance. But the beach and the dunes are also nearby. And for those who want to shop extensively or enjoy cosy restaurants, the historic centre of Haarlem is easily accessible by car, bicycle or public transport.

Accessibility

The flats are located between two N-roads (the Herenweg and the Heemsteedse Dreef), providing a fast connection to the major roads. Various buses also stop on these roads, so the location is also easily accessible by public transport. Heemstede-Aerdenhout station is also within 10 minutes’ cycling distance, from where both express and local trains depart for Haarlem and Amsterdam and for Leiden and The Hague.

History

The name ‘De Heerlijckheid’ (fiefdom) honours the fascinating origins of Heemstede. A fiefdom was land belonging to a lord to which certain ‘lordly rights’ were attached. When Haarlem received city rights in 1245 and was delineated, the need to name the surrounding areas also grew. The Counts of Holland – William II and his son Floris V – had the noble task of transforming the villages outside Haarlem into separate districts. These new districts were either governed by aldermen or pledged to feudal lords.

Heemstede itself was pledged to a nobleman from Holy, near Vlaardingen, named Reinier van Holy, who would later call himself ‘Van Heemstede’. Between 1284 and 1300, he built Heemstede Castle on the Spaarne. The castle was destroyed several times, until in 1810 it was so weak that it was demolished. The medieval foundations now lie beneath an estate called ‘Het Oude Slot’ (the old castle).
